Can SS 304 Pipe rust in water?

The AISI 304 Pipe does not rust in ordinary water, but they may corrode if they are subjected to strong chloride water. Because of their enhanced anti-rusting capabilities due to its chemical makeup, AISI 304 Pipe does not rust under typical atmospheric circumstances. However, the 316 grade stainless steel, which has molybdenum added to the composition, can efficiently withstand corrosion in chloride situations.

Stainless Steel 304 Pipe Specifications

ASTM A312 304: Seamless and straight-seam welded austenitic pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Filler metal not permitted during welding.

ASTM A358 304: Electric fusion welded austenitic pipe for corrosive and/or high temperature service. Typically only pipe up to 8 inch is produced to this specification. Addition of filler metal is permitted during welding.

ASTM A790 304: Seamless and straight-seam welded ferritic/austenitic (duplex) pipe intended for general corrosive service, with a particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

ASTM A409 304: Straight-seam or spiral-seam electric fusion welded large diameter austenitic light-wall pipe in sizes 14” to 30” with walls Sch5S and Sch 10S for corrosive and/or high

Corrosion Resistance

Excellent in a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media. Subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60°C. Considered resistant to potable water with up to about 200mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 150mg/L at 60°C.

 

Heat Resistance

Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and in continuous service to 925°C. Continuous use of 304 in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important. Grade 304L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be heated into the above temperature range.
